Why Gums Bleed?

Our gums called Gingiva is a keratinized tissue that surrounds and protects our teeth. Maintaining Gum health is important as infected gums can lead to more severe diseases in mouth. 

Bleeding gums can occur due to many reasons. Some of them are

1. Gingivitis

The yellowish plaque and tartar which gets deposited around teeth due to improper brushing causes swollen, inflamed and tender gums that bleed even on touching. It is treated by cleaning procedure.

2. Periodontitis

Gingivitis if left untreated leads to more advanced form of disease called periodontitis in which gums are tender, inflamed and bleeding. This can also aggravate infection in the bone causing teeth to become loose and shaky. Gums slowly start receding which eventually leads to tooth sensitivity. 

3. Scurvy

Scurvy is a disease caused by deficiency of Vit. C. It can cause gum bleeding and loose teeth.

4. Aggressive Brushing

Vigorous tooth brushing in horizontal motion also leads to gums inflammation and recession of gums (gums moving away from tooth).

Basic Treatment Protocol of gingival and periodontal diseases start with oral prophylaxis (cleaning) and Scaling. This procedure aims at removing the unwanted yellowish plaque and tartar deposited in your mouth which was actually irritating your gums causing infection and bleeding. Once scaling is completed, other needful procedures are carried out to prevent infection in bone. Most important is to maintain oral hygeine by proper brushing twice a day.
